Background

The vívofit jr. fitness wearable's accompanying app is utilized by children and parents to track daily activity, chores, and gain "moves" in the app's game. This wearable has been meet with much success, garnering branding collaborations with companies such as Disney. The vívofit jr. line allows Garmin to gain new customers early in their fitness journey and they eventually graduate to the adult line of Garmin wearables. Since the final interfaces are on the app, I can show them, but NDA guidelines call for more broad descriptions of the internal processes.

01 / Problem

The vívofit jr. application needed a feature that would visualize sleep data to users. With the majority of the users being young children, parents were interested in seeing how children were sleeping. The addition of a sleep feature would also help to bring the vívofit jr. more in line with Garmin's adult wearables, whose app features sleep analysis features.

Design a sleep tracking feature that would allow users to easily view their quality of sleep via visualized data.

Create the interface designs using Sketch and help with testing of the feature.

04 / Requirements Gathering & Research

I undertook the following tasks in order to better understand what was expected of this feature:

• Speaking with parents. I spoke to parents whose children use the app and asked why they use it, when they check data, and their overall experience with it.
• Studying vívofit jr. style guides. The vívofit jr. has it's own unique aesthetic, separate from the adult wearables app. Before I began anything beyond simple wireframes, I needed to know the brand aesthetic.
• Academic Research. I read various studies discussing the importance of growing children having set sleep routines. This helped to further rationalize the need for a feature to display sleep patterns.
• User reviews. I read reviews of the current application iteration in order better understand user likes, dislikes, and habits of use.

Key Research Takeaways

• Children are more interested in playing the in-app game than seeing the data that is being tracked. The gamification was the primary reason children would independently use the app.
• Parents are the primary viewers of activity data. Typically via routine daily checks to track child health, at a pediatrician appointment, when a child feels ill, or similar scenarios.

05 / Ideation & Iteration

Over the course of the week, I would visualize a few different ideas, often using pencil sketches or Freehand.

I would solicit feedback and critique from the software developer assigned to the project, the UX manager, and the vívofit junior team UX Designer. During the once a week larger UX team meeting, I was able to occasionally present concepts for.

Sketches would then be iterated off of with that critique in mind.

06 / User Testing

Once my concepts were approved by higher ups and taken into higher fidelity, I was able to meet with the testing team.

• Protocol consisted of a series of tasks and scenarios that would evaluate the navigation and understandability of the interface designs. (e.g. "Could you tell us how much deep sleep your child got on January 3rd?")
• Testing participants: parents who were active users of the app. Research had determined it was primarily parents viewing data.
• Evaluating how users with a previously existing understanding of the app would interact with the new designs.

07 / Handoff

Annotated design files, specs, and redlines were handed off in their entirety to the engineering team for the vívofit jr. application.
